Planning Your Pond
The first step is to consider what you want in a pond. Do you want goldfish or koi? Or do you prefer only aquatic plants? Would you like a waterfall or fountain as well? Will it be formal, or informal?

Water Garden
A water garden typically contains both goldfish or koi, along with water lilies and other aquatic plants. Water gardens in moderate climates usually need for an area of the pond to be at least 2 feet deep.
Koi Pond
A koi pond is different from a water garden because koi need a larger area due to the fact that they get quite large. Koi ponds should be no less than 1000 gallons in volume. These ponds should also be at least 3 feet deep. Four to 5 feet deep is even better.
Extra Features
Some of the extras you'll want to consider adding to your pond are Fountains, Waterfalls, and Spitters.
Choosing the Location for your Pond
You'll want to be able to see the pond from your deck, or windows, or perhaps a bench or gazebo. Yet you don't want to locate it in an area that your children use to play games. The area needs to get plenty of sunlight for the health of the plants. Choose a location away from trees and bushes to prevent leaves from fouling the pond. Finally, don't forget safety. There are safety features that can be installed on your pond to help prevent tragic accidents.
Measuring for your Pond

Maximum length + twice the depth + 2 feet
Maximum width + twice the depth + 2 feet
Example: 6' wide by 9' long by 18" deep (1.5' pond)
6' + 1.5' + 1.5' + 2' = 11'
9' + 1.5' + 1.5' + 2' = 14'
Formal vs. Informal Ponds
Formal ponds are usually round or square, and the same depth throughout. They are ideal for a traditional lily pond.
Natural ponds have gently curving, irregular shapes. They are attractive to wildlife.
Choosing Pond Plants
You'll want many plants chosen for their beauty, but you'll also want some that oxygenate the water and keep your pond healthy. Some plants grow best on the sides of the pond and are called "marginal" plants. Others just float freely on the surface.
